Day 25

"There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore, I command you to be open handed toward your people who are poor and needy in your land." Deuteronomy 15:11

I chose this verse because the poor have always been in my mind. It is true that a lot of people in this day and age are poor because they choose not to work, and to beg and rely on compassion instead. But there are a large amount that are poor due to a tragedy, or the economy. Around Christmas time, there was a house fire here in North Vancouver, the people lost everything except for the engagement ring that was saved from under the tree. Within a few days, they were given a place to stay, new furniture, cash donations, new toys for the children. The man was a contractor, and lost all of his tools, which were also replaced. It was just amazing to see how fast a neighborhood responded to someone in need of help. That is the way that I wish all of us to be.

I think that now "our land" has extended to the whole world. I thought of Haiti and the world response when I read that verse. It is so encouraging when people reach out to help those that are truly needy.
